Occasional Tables - Choosing the Right Style

Occasional tables are one of the most versatile pieces of furniture one can own, as their small size means that they can be used in a number of functions, whether it be as a coffee table, side console table, or a temporary eating surface.

Below, we highlight our favorite pieces which can be used as occasional tables, pulled from our solid wood end tables collection. All pieces are made from the solid wood of your choice and offered with dozens of different stain and paint options. What’s more, most of these tables can be bought as part of a solid wood living room set.

Tips When Choosing an Occasional Table

Consider the intended use of the occasional table - The point of an occasional table is to move it around from one function to the next, but no doubt you have one or two primary uses in mind. Therefore, make sure it is the right height and dimensions to fulfill these various needs.

Determine if the table should be an accent or coordinate it with the living room (and other rooms in which it may be used) - The occasional table doesn’t have to seamlessly match with the rest of your furniture, but it shouldn’t be a clashing eyesore, either.

If you decide to make the table visually pop in contrast with the room, make sure it:

  • Is one of the only accents - If you have purple walls, a sunny yellow rug, and a turquoise coffee table with a bright pink vase on top, adding a painted green occasional table will make it feel more like a random addition rather than a purposeful accent. While this is an extreme example, our point is that most of the other room’s colors and textures should be fairly consistent to make the accent feel purposeful.

  • That the contrast is palpable rather than muddied - Another way to make your accent feel purposeful is to make it distinctly different. For example, if the majority of your living room’s furniture is a lighter stain, apply an espresso stain to your occasional table. To learn more, read our piece about mixing and matching wood stains.

If you decide to coordinate the occasional table with your other living room furniture:

  • Custom order the piece (using Countryside Amish Furniture) and request samples of stains in advance - With our dozens of stain options and variety of hardwood options, we’ll be able to near-match your existing wood pieces. We recommend ordering stain samples in advance so you can view how they will look in different lights.

Keep in mind the general decor theme of the room - Coordination applies to more than just the color scheme. For instance, if you have a lot of Mid-Century furniture with straight lines, an occasional table with Queen Anne flourishes will seem out of place.
