Choosing a TV Stand for the Bedroom

Bedrooms are more than just places for sleep. They’re where we bring loved ones a warm cup of morning coffee, where we dive into a good book, and when we're under the weather, they provide the essential relaxation needed for recovery. Occasionally, our bedrooms can become cozy havens for snuggling under the covers to enjoy our favorite movies. However, for this, you’ll need both a TV and a TV stand.

While there’s been plenty written about finding the perfect TV stand for your living room, those guidelines don’t always apply to the bedroom. Therefore, we thought it would be helpful to share some tailored tips for selecting a TV stand that enhances your bedroom's aesthetic while providing functional storage.

To begin your hunt, browse both our TV stands and dressers, knowing that all dressers can be ordered without a mirror.

How to Find the Ideal Positioning For Your Bedroom’s TV

The first step to finding the perfect TV stand for your bedroom is to identify the ideal height for the television. To begin, get comfortable in bed by lying down in your usual watching position. Ensure you’re relaxed and supported by your pillows, much like you’d be if you were actually going to watch TV.

Next, determine your eye level by measuring from the floor to your eyes while lying down. This point will help you decide where the center of the TV should be. Ideally, this would be a two-person job, in which one person lays down and instructs the other individual about where to place a piece of painter’s tape to signify the ideal height. Keep in mind that, if you opt for a TV stand rather than mounting the screen, there won’t be angling.

Now, you’ll be able to identify the ideal height of your bedroom’s TV stand. Calculate this by measuring from the floor to the painter’s tape. Now, subtract half of your TV’s height from this figure to account for the fact that you want to stare at the middle of the screen rather than the top or bottom. And there you have it—this is the perfect for your TV stand!

Other Factors for Choosing a TV Stand For Your Bedroom

Must-haves for your bedroom TV stand

  • Solid hardwood build - You’ll want the furniture that supports your TV to be sturdy; a single bump in the middle of the night shouldn’t cause the television to come crashing down. For the safest, most resilient option, choose a hardwood rather than flimsier knock-off materials like softwoods or engineered variations.

  • A large enough TV stand to physically support your television - As we explore in Size and Height Guide For Your TV Stand, your bedroom’s TV stand should be a few inches wider and deeper than the television itself for added stability.

Questions to consider when assessing your options

What you will want your TV stand to store?

Your TV stand can serve multiple purposes—supporting your television and offering extra storage. Put it to good use by deciding on its function from the start! It could double as an extra dresser, offer open shelving to display personal items, or include enclosed compartments for keeping things tidy. Deciding upfront will help you choose the perfect configuration for your bedroom's TV stand.

Where in the room will you want your TV?

The positioning of the television can have a direct impact on the design of the stand, itself. For example, we offer solid wood corner TV stands shaped differently than most others our Amish craftspeople build.

What design elements will help the TV stand tie in with the rest of the bedroom’s decor?

Your bedroom should feel, above all else, like a bedroom. You don’t want the TV stand to stick out like a sore thumb. Ideally, it should have a wood type and stain that match the primary pieces in your room. If that’s not possible, try to find a stand that aligns with the underlying themes: if your bedroom is French Country, your TV stand should reflect that style; if your dressers use reclaimed wood, consider a TV stand that does the same.

How much floor space do you have available for the TV stand?

While we’ve covered the height, the width, and depth are just as important. Think about the space you’ll need to comfortably pass in front of the stand to reach the far side of the bed—and whether you’ll have enough room when you’re tired and navigating in the dark.
