Trying to find your next dining room table? Check out our top picks for the best dining tables of 2024.

A dining room table will be one of the most important furniture purchases in your home. It’s a focal point, a gathering place, and a useful space for dinner parties and everyday dining. It should reflect the kind of family you are, as well as the entertaining you plan to do. Style, size, shape, and formality—your dining room table says a lot about you.

A quality, real wood table shows that you value comfort, tradition, and beautiful interiors. Wood tables endure through all the familial changes and interior design trends that may come and go around it.

Our Top Picks: 2024’s Best Dining Room Tables

If you’re looking for an authentic American-made dining room table for your home, this article includes our top picks for 2024. Countryside Amish Furniture knows and loves our furniture as much as our customers will. You can trust that we’ve thought long and hard about which tables to include in this list. No matter what your unique needs are—small, large, budget-friendly, dinner party-ready—we have the perfect table for you. Meet our winners!

Our Selection Criteria

All of our solid wood tables are fully customizable and built to order. So then how did we choose the best variations? We chose tables that we’ve had the best feedback about over the last year. The feedback came directly from satisfied customers, through their discussions with our builders, and product reviews.

We also wanted to make sure the tables were attainable at a medium price point, and within Countryside’s “standard models” that won’t go anywhere any time soon.

What to Know Before You Buy

How does one choose the right dining table for their space, lifestyle, and needs? We have a handy checklist of the most important things to consider:

Measure First

For optimal comfort and aesthetics, you should have three feet of space on all sides between the table and the wall. To account for this, start by measuring the length and width of the dining room and subtract three feet from those two measurements to get your target maximum dining table size. Pro tip: layout the size of the table with masking tape or a similar-sized piece of furniture to properly visualize it in your space.

Select a Table Size

Even after measuring the optimal size, you should consider that while a table might technically “fit” it could still look too bulky or dark in a smaller space, and therefore out of place. The size of your table will also depend on the number of people you’d like to seat at your table, and whether you want formal spacing or casual spacing. There’s more on that in our dining table size and seating guide

Choose Your Shape and Style

Dining tables can be square, rectangle, round or oval. If your room is square, choose a square table. If your room is rectangular, a rectangular or oval table will work. If your room is a smaller space, a round table is a great option.

Some of the most popular dining table styles today are Arts & Crafts, Traditional, Farmhouse (rustic), Mission, Shaker, Mid Century Modern, Queen Anne, Contemporary, and French Country. Get a closer look at each style in our Dining Table Style Guide

Consider the Legs

There’s more to think about than just the amount of legs you want. You can also pick a trestle base or pedestal base. The table leg style you choose can impact comfort and seat spacing. For optimal legroom, choose a pedestal base.

Pick a Material

Dining tables come in any hard material you can think of. From plastic to metal and veneer to the glass top. For a table that’s durable, handmade, and timeless design, you should always choose a solid wood table. Other trendy styles come and go, but a wood dining room table can be in your family for years to come.

Popular types of wood species for dining room tables are Oak, Maple, Cherry, Walnut, Hickory, and Elm. Each one has unique wood grain characteristics and a variety of subtle shade and stain options. For help choosing your optimal wood, read our guide to selecting your wood

Get the Right Seating

When choosing dining furniture seats, there’s more to consider than just the number of guests. Whether your table is in a formal dining room, a nook, or used as a kitchen table, you’ll know whether you want to provide formal or casual seating. You may want barstools for a high-top table, a bench that can tuck under the table for more space, and chairs with or without armrests. Luckily we have a guide to dining room chairs to help you choose.

Know your Budget

How much do dining room tables cost? This will vary depending on your needs. For example, a full dining room furniture set will be more expensive than a plastic top table. There’s a solution for every budget, from $100 to $10,000. You’ll pay more for quality materials and expert craftsmanship, but the tradeoff is that these tables will last for generations. The bigger the table, and the more detailed the construction, the more you’re likely to pay. The simpler the table (and buying a table vs a full set) the less it will cost you.

Buying Online vs a Showroom

The biggest upside of buying online is the bigger variety. You can find exactly what you need in the size, shape, and color that you need it. Showrooms can only stock a limited inventory due to size, whereas all of our furniture is handmade to order, which means it arrives at your home fully assembled.

With technology improvements, the online buying process just keeps getting better. You’ll have easy access to our customer service team and expert wood construction builders through every step in the selection, building, and shipping process.

This table begins in a number of starting sizes but extends to an impressive 144” long. This traditional, solid wood dining table is a strong contender for any social butterflies out there.

The Casey Trestle Table boasts a 1 1/2" thick table top with the appearance of a 4" thick slab thanks to its built-up edge. All crafted from durable Rough Sawn Maple, this modern trestle table is top coated with a hand-rubbed stain and resilient catalyzed conversion varnish.

What Customers Are Saying:
"We bought this table recently as our kitchen/dining table since we don't have a separate dining room. We love the look and feel, the pieces fit together incredibly smoothly and lock in place, and the leaves expand the table perfectly. We bought the 36x60 -- the table without any leaves can fit 4 people comfortably, or 6 people tightly. The table with both leaves can fit 8 people comfortably, or 12 people tightly. My husband loves the look of the rough sawn maple, where the "imperfections" add to the aesthetic, and it's both a visually elegant and a perfect "tavern table" feel at the same time."

  • Two 18" leaves included with table

Generally you want three feet of walking space around the table with the chairs not in use (slid under the table). Also, most dining tables come in one of the basic shapes: rectangular, square, and round. The width and depth of the table vary based on the shape. Rectangular dining room tables are the most common shape, and generally range between 36” and 48” wide. In order to seat at least four to eight people, the dining table should be 48” to 90” long. The rule of thumb is allow 24" to 30” of space per seat at your dining table. Square and round tables are better suited for smaller groups; popular sizes range from 42” to 54” and may seat four to six people.

If you’re considering a wood dining table, always opt for a hardwood such as Hickory, Oak, Maple, Quartersawn White Oak, Walnut, or Cherry. Generally, the harder the wood the less prone it is to wear and abrasion such as dings and scratches. A solid wood dining room table is best for everyday use especially for families with young children. Tables made from engineered or composite woods, which include plywoods and MDF, are never as strong as a hardwood. Red Oak is a classic wood type perfect for a traditional home, while species like Maple and Walnut have a smoother grain well-suited for a more contemporary look. Quartersawn White Oak is ideal for an Arts and Crafts or Mission table, while Cherry has a formal appeal and Hickory is rustic.

Industry standard says you should allow 30" of space per adult while setting up your formal dining table. Check out our complete guide to setting up your table for more information.

Most dining tables share the same standard height: between 29" and 31" high. Formal dining tables tend to be closer to 30 inches. At this height, most people can rest their feet comfortably on the floor, so it works well for formal dining rooms or more casual areas such as eat-in kitchens or breakfast nooks. Elevated dining tables do come in other heights. A counter height table, at 36” high, is the same height as a kitchen countertop or gathering table. These tables are a great option for informal spaces. Another relaxed option, a 42” bar height table, makes for a quick transition from standing to sitting. Also called a pub table or a gathering table, bar height tables are perfect for entertaining in both residential and commercial spaces.

Round tables generally take up less space and offer a more cozy, intimate dining experience. However, if you’re looking to host a number of guests, large round tables don’t typically function well in small spaces.

Dining room table tops are usually around 2.5ft off the ground. Casual dining tables are closer to 28” whereas formal dining tables are 30” from the ground to table top.

Mix a small amount of vinegar or dish soap into warm water. Dip a clean rag into this mixture and remove excess water. Wipe the table tops, and then rinse with a water-only rag. You should always check with the manufacturer’s instructions when cleaning wood table tops to best protect the integrity.

When it comes to rug sizes, the most common mistake is going too small. A rug should be big enough so that the chairs remain on the carpet when chairs are pulled out. But you should still leave at least 1ft of room between the wall and the rug.

When not in use, a formal dining room can be a seasonal display. Include decorative placemats, chargers, cloth napkins and centerpieces. Get creative with a modern farmhouse or rustic look.

To prevent scratches and dents in wood tabletops, you can use coasters, placemats, soft linens, and even felted bottoms on heavy centerpieces.

With a standard 8ft ceiling, you should hang a chandelier so that its lowest point is 35” from the table top. Remember that chandeliers aren’t just for lighting, they’re a focal point of decor in your dining room.

You should consider furniture of various levels. For example, a bar cart or credenza lower than your table, or a hutch with a great height. Don’t forget to add texture with a rug, greenery or tabletop accents to pull your dining space together.
