A hand-crafted look into all things amish furniture

Amish Furniture on the Internet

  //   Chris Alcorn

One of the biggest things to do though is find out exactly where the Amish furniture is being made. Just because a piece of furniture looks made by the Amish doesn't mean it was.

Before the internet was created, people would leave their comfortable homes and families and physically go to a store to peruse their wares. This shopping excursion could take hours upon hours at a variety of stores and even then the exact item you were looking for may never be found. Then came the internet and shopping as we know it has forever been changed. Nowadays, a few simple keywords typed into Google search engine and thousands of choices are at our fingertips.

Even though the Amish do not have the internet due to their strict religious beliefs, their way of life has been touched by modern day. Many businesses are selling handcrafted Amish furniture on the internet. Home based Amish woodworkers throughout Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and Illinois have set up with shop with businesses to sell their products around the world.

One of the biggest things to do though is find out exactly where the Amish furniture is being made. Just because a piece of furniture looks made by the Amish doesn't mean it was. As the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) continues to tighten pollution in the United States, many furniture manufactures have found it cheaper to close their factories in the U.S.A. and open new factories overseas where the EPA cannot govern. Most furniture sold in the United States comes from many Asian countries such as China, Vietnam and Indonesia. However there is a big loophole.

A piece of furniture may be labeled as "Made in America" or "Made in U.S.A." but it may very well not be true. In order to obtain this stamp, "the product's final assembly or processing must take place in the U.S." That means that the parts can be made in other countries, assembled here in the U.S, and still get the "Made in U.S.A." stamp.

Go "green" is the battle-cry for the 21st century. Many have not thought what this means in regards to their furniture. To buy a piece of furniture from a store such as Wal-Mart means that wood from the Amazon rainforest may have been used and then shipped to China to be shaped into a piece of furniture. That furniture is then shipped here to America. All of this is extremely detrimental to the global environment.

United States of America is in an economic downturn. With factories closing and jobs being sent overseas, Americans are scrambling to get by. To really buy a product that is truly "Made in U.S.A." then one must buy Amish made furniture. The Amish only use raw materials that are available to them here in the States. They abide by the tough EPA pollution laws and build quality furniture.

To obtain that special American piece of furniture made by a quality Amish craftsman you don't have to travel to the Midwest, you can conveniently purchase your specific Amish Furniture at Countryside.
